Multiple layers in detail and colour

types of knowledge in painting
Here ... is another example from Marty's practice. Within 20 seconds of the paint being applied to two small hills on the skyline, a significant change in atmosphere is effected. Such moments can be monumental in the way they stimulate change of ideas for the painter. What may be mountains can become clouds or cloud-covered mountains, or an ambiguous feature that is neither mountains nor cloud, but resides as a question mark with the painter or viewer. This highlights the multiple discursive layers operating between technique, appearance and symbolism. Even small changes to the paint like this can signify an impending change in the weather or hills can be given a new association with whales or dolphins swimming to the horizon beyond the land. Small changes in the painted surface can effect major changes of meaning without alteration to the overall structure of the painting. This is important, because we can learn that slight variation of shade or colour is just as significant as changes in structure. (Reader 2007)
