Multiple ideas, conflicting interests and a cartography of mind

The capacity to carry multiple ideas forward simultaneously is given emphasis in this next video .... Here Marty exposes a conflict:

I try and strive for 'the correct colours, the correct feel as far as I'm concerned to that land but at the same time I've got another part of the brain telling me to go all fauve; to let go and to be widely abstract in the colours and technique so yes, there is definitely conflict going on in there.

This highlights the capacity of the painter to hold in place simultaneous but conflicting influences upon the work. The painting feeds back to the painter its emergent representation, where the 'conflicting' interests compete in the painter's fresh evaluation. In this case both sets of attributes, realism and the use of expressive colour, are worked through in the continuation of the work. (Reader 2007)
