Marty can be seen creating the horizon before filling in the background sky. From this point he slowly worked down the canvas and into the valley, the central focus of the painting. (It is so easy for me to conflate the painting on the canvas and the geography of the place). In the process, Marty changes his attention from a broad working to a detailed working on one feature of the horizon before resuming broader considerations of the canvas. He stops working the whole canvas and pays attention to the detail of the horizon. (Reader 2007)
